Roman wall work nears completion

Ian Williams
Experts said the wall was one of the oldest Roman walls in England

Repairs to the historic town wall in Colchester, Essex, are due to completed next month.

The £115,000 project to repair the wall began in March and was funded by the borough council and a £46,000 grant from English Heritage.

Ian Williams, a stonemason with Bakers of Danbury, which is carrying out the work, said it was among the oldest Roman walls in England.

The wall also shows evidence of 18th and 20th Century repairs.

Mr Williams said: "It is somewhere around 2,000 years old and it's really nice to work on something as old as that and know it's going to stand for probably another 2,000 years."
