A 14-year-old girl suffered burns and a perforated ear drum when a lightning bolt was diverted through her iPod during a storm in Essex.

Sophie Frost and her boyfriend Mason Billington were sheltering under a tree in Rayleigh during a storm on Monday.

Lightning struck and Sophie passed out as the current travelled through her iPod headphones.

A motorist stopped and drove the pair, who are pupils at Sweyne Park School in Rayleigh, to Southend Hospital.
