Woman in fluid bags probe bailed

The Children's Unit at Basildon Hospital
Hospital staff called police when they found the bags leaking fluid

A 21-year-old woman arrested and questioned in connection with damage to intravenous fluid bags at an Essex hospital has been released on bail.

It is thought about 21 of the bags were discovered with punctures at Basildon University Hospital on 19 April.

Detectives had ruled out any links between damage to the bags and the death of a child at the hospital the previous day.

The woman, from Wickford, has been released on bail until 15 July.

She was arrested on suspicion of contamination of goods under the Public Order Act, and of criminal damage.

Basildon and Thurrock University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust said it has reviewed its storage procedures for fluid bags.
