Man arrested over fatal collision

A man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving after a woman aged in her 80s was killed in a car crash in Essex.

Police said the woman, from Worcestershire, was a passenger in a Ford Escort, which was in collision with a Nissan Micra.

The crash happened in Steeple Road between Latchingdon and Mayland.

A police spokeswoman said a 45-year-old man from Worcestershire was arrested after the crash at about 1310 BST.

Minor injuries

She said he remained in custody and would be questioned later.

The other occupants of the Escort were a family from Worcestershire on holiday in the area, the spokeswoman said.

The occupants of the Micra, a man and woman aged in their 60s and from Stratford in east London, suffered minor injuries in the crash. They were taken to Broomfield Hospital for treatment.

A woman in her 40s and a teenage girl, who were in the Escort, were also taken to hospital after suffering minor injuries.

The spokeswoman appealed for witnesses to the crash to come forward.

In particular she asked motorists who were caught up in slow moving traffic in the area prior to the crash to contact officers.
