Girl dies in hospital after crash

A 14-year-old girl critically injured when a car hit a group of youngsters walking home from a birthday party has died in hospital, police have said.

Eleanor McGrath, of Shoebury, Essex, died in Great Ormond Street Hospital late on Tuesday night after suffering head injuries.

More than a dozen youngsters were hurt in the crash in Thorpe Bay, Essex, late on Friday.

Police said a 16-year-old boy remained "critical" with multiple injuries.

A 17-year-old boy from Southend, Essex, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving before being released on police bail without charge, pending further inquiries.

Officers said a Citroen C1 was thought to have gone out of control and hit youngsters.
