Tree planting boosting hedgerows

A council project to plant 250,000 trees in Essex has resulted in flourishing hedgerows in the county.

Farm owners have taken advantage of the tree initiative to use native shrubs and trees to repair and reinstate traditional hedgerows.

The second half of the last century saw a fall in tree cover and a decline in the quality woodlands and hedgerows.

Hedgerows provide food and shelter for wildlife and link up woodlands across the countryside.

Farm owners taking up the scheme receive grants to improve the appearance and quality of their land and local area.

Through the tree pledge, Essex County Council aims to encourage the planting of trees and hedgerows.

Councillor Tracey Chapman said: "The tree pledge has been a remarkable way of bringing so many people who care about the environment together to do something to positive for Essex's countryside.

"I'm delighted that the pledge has enabled landowners and farmers to restore hedging and tree cover and thank them for helping us build on the natural beauty of the county."
