Elderly man dies after flat fire

A man has died after a fire broke out in an Essex flat.

Essex Fire and Rescue Service said the man, who was aged in his 70s, was found inside the smoke-logged flat in Crowstone Avenue, Westcliff-on-Sea.

Firefighters led him out of the building and he was treated by ambulance officers but later died, the fire service said.

Fire crews from Leigh-on-Sea and Southend fought the fire. An investigation into its cause has begun.
