Clubbers screened for chlamydia

More than 100 clubbers in an East Yorkshire town have been tested for chlamydia as part of a drive to tackle the infection.

A team has been screening clubbers at the Utopia nightclub in Bridlington for the past two months.

Some received positive results and were given advice on medical treatment.

Youngsters aged 15 to 25-years-old are being targeted in the wider scheme and now the project will now be rolled out to pubs and clubs in the East Riding.

Responsibility reminder

Chlamydia is now the most common sexually-transmitted infection among young people.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has worked on the project with East Riding of Yorkshire Primary Care Trust and Hull Teaching PCT.

Tina Holtby, the council's acting licensing manager, said: "We recognise that the consumption of alcohol in licensed premises and sexual activity is closely linked and that there is a need to remind young people out there in busy clubs and pubs to take responsibility for their own behaviour and remain safe at all times.

"The promotion was piloted initially to see what response we would get and the promotion was well-received and taken in good humour by the customers at Utopia."
