Plans for a major clean-up of the Rivers Chelmer and Can in Essex have been unveiled.

Chelmsford Borough Council is organising a clean up which will take place on Saturday 11 October.

Local organisations, together with councillors, council staff and residents are being encouraged to go along and lend a hand.

The clean-up will include Orca Scuba Diving Academy divers who will collect rubbish from the depths of the rivers.

The Sea Cadets, the Chelmer Canal Trust and the Environment Agency will be in boats on the water picking up what they can on the rivers in and around Chelmsford.

Litter picking will also be carried out along the banks and surrounding area.

Chelmsford Borough Council's cabinet member for safer communities, Ian Grundy, said: "This river litter pick isn't a chore, but rather a community event."
