Services resume after repair work

Overhead cables
The three workers remain in hospital after falling up to 20ft

Train services between Norwich, Ipswich and London have resumed after repair work to overhead cables.

Disruption to travellers had been caused when about a mile (1.6km) of electric power cable came down near Ingatestone in Essex on Monday.

Three workers were injured while carrying out the repairs to the power cables on the line on Wednesday night.

They fell up to 20ft to the ground from an elevated platform and were kept in hospital overnight.

Network Rail said the accident occurred at about 1400 BST near Ingatestone.

'Thoroughly investigated'

Keith Lumley, from Network Rail, said: "This incident will be thoroughly investigated by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, an independent organisation from the railway.

"They will take an objective view, they will look at everything, whether it could be human error, whether it could be equipment failure, to find out exactly what happened to ensure it does not happen again."

East of England Ambulance Service confirmed that one man had suffered head and chest injuries and another suffered minor leg injuries.

A third man, who suffered head injuries, was flown to Queen's Hospital, Romford.

The line which runs from London Liverpool Street to Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich was closed for 90 minutes following the incident, and subsequent services were disrupted.

British Transport Police said an investigation was under way.
