Supermarket lorry driver injured

A 46-year-old driver had to be cut free from his cab after his supermarket delivery lorry plunged down a 40ft (12.3m) embankment on the M25 in Essex.

The accident happened at J30 near South Ockenden late on Saturday night and the driver was taken to Darent Valley Hospital in Kent with leg injuries.

Essex Police said the road was closed for several hours and the inside lane will remain shut on Sunday.

"There may be congestion on the M25," a police spokesman said.

An investigation is under way into the cause of the crash.

The lorry was empty of goods and the driver has been kept in hospital for observation, the police spokesman said.

A fire service spokesman said: "Crews worked for more than two hours to free the driver and because of the nature of the collision, the driver was trapped by his leg, only one firefighter was able to work with hydraulic cutting equipment and a power saw."
