A 47-year-old man had his jaw broken in two places when he was attacked by two men on the doorstep of his Essex home.
The men called at the victim's home in Mendip Crescent, Westcliff, on Tuesday and asked him where a woman called Cerys Kelly, or Kerry, was.
When he said he lived alone and did not know the woman, they struck him with a wrought iron doorstop, police said.
He spent three days in hospital and had to have three metal plates screwed to his jaw, after the attack on Tuesday.
His attackers are described as white with tanned complexions, aged 30 to 35, and spoke with Irish accents.
One was about 5ft 3in (1.6m) of medium build and had short, tight, black, curly hair.
The other attacker was about 5ft 8in (1.7m), of stocky build, with short, mousy-brown hair and had a crooked or broken nose.
Essex Police are appealing to anyone with information to contact them.
