Alert at restaurant over gas leak

A restaurant had to be evacuated following a gas leak in Essex.

Police evacuated the premises and other properties in a 200m (656ft) radius of the building on Timberlog Lane at Barstable near Basildon.

Fire crews were prepared to deal with a major gas leak but an investigation found it was small gas leak which stemmed from a faulty appliance.

National Grid gas engineers isolated the fault and people affected were allowed back into their homes.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said the incident on Sunday was dealt with in less than an hour of the alarm being raised.
