Patients with certain mental health problems are to be prescribed library books instead of medication as part of an innovative scheme.
GPs in north Essex are to encourage people to learn more about their condition as an alternative to drugs.
Anyone who visits their doctor with psychological problems will be directed to books on overcoming the condition available at their local library.
Six surgeries in Clacton, Brightlingsea and Colchester have joined the scheme.
Tendring and Colchester Primary Care Trusts, North East Essex Mental Health Partnership and Essex County Council will run the project jointly as a pilot.
Running parallel to the project is support from local mental health charities, which can discuss any issues arising from the books themselves.
