A six-year-old boy was killed when a wall collapsed on top of him as he tried to retrieve a football.

William Eastwood was playing in the garden of his grandmother's house in the Bourne Mill area of Colchester, Essex, when the accident happened.

Police believe the youngster was climbing over the breeze block wall into an alleyway when he fell and the wall collapsed on Sunday.

He was taken to Colchester General Hospital but died a short time later.

'Little angel'

Essex Police said they were investigating the incident as a matter of routine, but have described it as a tragic accident.

William's mother Kelly Knight paid tribute to her "special little boy".

She said: "William was a little angel with a heart of gold. He was a very loving and caring little boy who used to help anyone.

"He was always there with a cuddle to let you know everything was okay. William was a very clever boy who was very popular at school and was doing very well there.

"He was a very special boy who loved his little brother - he was the best son you could wish for."
