Man is crushed by concrete block
A construction worker was killed when he was crushed by a falling section of bridge in Essex.

Emergency services were called on Sunday morning to the A1306, in West Thurrock, where a bridge over a railway line was being replaced.

The man, who is thought to be a 43-year-old from Bucks, was killed when the concrete block, which weighed around 30 tonnes, fell on top of him.

Essex Police and the Health and Safety Executive have begun an investigation.

Steve Brant, of Essex Ambulance Service, said: "A section of the bridge had been removed by crane.

"As the 30 tonne concrete block was being lowered onto a trailer, it slipped and fell onto a worker who was standing beside the trailer.

"Although ambulance staff were there within minutes he had suffered massive injuries and unfortunately there was nothing that could be done to save him and he was confirmed dead on scene."
