Entertainer Michael Barrymore claims he was "vilified" by the press after a man's body was found in a swimming pool at his luxury home, it has emerged.

In a Celebrity Big Brother conversation he admitted stupidity over the incident which resulted in the death of Stuart Lubbock, 31, from Harlow, Essex.

He was "sick" of being kicked around by the press, he said.

He also admitted fleeing the scene of the incident in 2001 was a mistake, blaming being terrified and drunk.

Mr Barrymore's career collapsed after 31-year-old Mr Lubbock's body was discovered in the swimming pool at his 1.5m mansion at Roydon near Harlow in Essex.

Medical examinations revealed that Mr Lubbock had suffered serious internal injuries, suggesting he may have been the victim of a serious sexual assault before his death.

London-born Barrymore, 53, was interviewed by police, but never charged and an inquest in September 2002 recorded an open verdict.
