Experienced climber Gavin Nightingale went missing on Ben Nevis

A body found near Britain's highest mountain is a missing journalist from Essex, police have confirmed.

A couple discovered the human remains while walking opposite the northen face of Ben Nevis on 30 April.

The Northern Constabulary in Scotland has announced that the remains had been formally identified as 38-year-old Gavin Nightingale.

The senior sub-editor and experienced climber from Colchester, Essex, was reported missing on 12 February.

He was last seen leaving the Glen Nevis youth hostel to climb tne 4,406ft high Ben Nevis the day before.
