Two firefighters suffered minor injuries while tackling a fire in a thatched cottage.
Fire crews were called to the blaze at Dury cottage in the village of Aythorpe Roding, north of Chelmsford, just before 2300 BST on Sunday.
It took several hours to bring the fire under control. One of the crew suffered an eye injury and the other was treated for sickness.
Investigators are at the scene but the fire is not thought to be suspicious.
