Trained firearms officers from Essex Police are to start carrying Taser electric stun guns from Wednesday.

So far the force has only used the guns during training exercises in the county.

From 31 August Taser guns could be used by the specially trained officers in all firearms operations.

Critics have raised safety concerns about the guns which, by firing two probes, can send 50,000 volts of electricity through the body.

The electricity goes through the body causing temporary incapacity but some critics believe they can be lethal.
