Chelmsford Borough Council is scrapping its "Chelmsford Spectacular" music festival after 15 years.
Councillors say there will be several smaller events held during the year in Hylands Park, rather than the large August Bank Holiday show.
The decision was made at a meeting on Wednesday night over concerns about the falling popularity of the annual event.
In the past, festival-goers have been entertained by Status Quo, Boyzone and a performance of the musical Evita.
But Conservative councillor Christopher Kingsley said it was time for a change.
He said: "We've thought about this very carefully, and our officers have done a lot of work on this.
"At last night's cabinet, the members agreed to progress with what we believe to be an exciting series of special events over the next three years."
The Chelmsford Festival, which lasts for two weeks, will still be held at the Hylands Park venue.
