Two Dorset heath fires 'started deliberately'

Firefighters were called to two heath fires in Dorset which were started deliberately over the weekend.

Crews quickly extinguished a fire at Turlin Moor in Hamworthy at about 1600 GMT on Sunday.

A few hours earlier, a member of the public managed to extinguish a fire at heathland at Bourne Valley before firefighters arrived.

It comes as the fire service steps up patrols in a bid to tackle the problem of heath fires over the summer.

Community safety teams will use mountain bikes to patrol heathlands around Poole and Bournemouth and other rural areas the force has not been able to reach.

The number of heath fires started deliberately increases as the evenings become lighter, the fire service said.
