Woman fends off mugger with punch in Dorset

A woman punched a would-be mugger to the ground as he tried to snatch her bag in a Dorset street.

Janice White, 46, was walking in Great George Street, Weymouth, when the man jumped from behind a parked van and grabbed her handbag.

Miss White punched the man in the head, causing him to fall to the floor. When he got up he ran off empty-handed towards Gloucester Mews.

Dorset Police are looking for a woman who may have seen the man run off.

I think I put the fear of God into him. Presumably he wasn't expecting a woman to fight back.

Miss White was on her way to work in a pub at 1750 GMT on Thursday when the incident happened.

She said: "I didn't have time to think about it. I did self defence years ago but I have never needed it until now.

"I'm pleased that I managed to fight him off but I'm so angry.

"What gives him the God-given right to steal my bag?

"I'm a bit nervous now but I'm still going to carry on as normal."

After the incident, Miss White continued her journey and worked her shift as normal.

She added: "I'm just glad it wasn't an elderly person who can't fight back.

Injured thief

"I think I put the fear of God into him. Presumably he wasn't expecting a woman to fight back."

Pc Chris Bevins, of Weymouth police station, said: "Miss White was very brave to do what she did - she may even have injured the thief."

The man is described as white, 18 to 25 years old and of medium build. He was wearing a baseball cap, a dark-coloured hooded top and black jeans.

The woman who may have seen the would-be thief is described as white, five feet six inches tall, of large build, aged in her mid fifties with blond shoulder length hair.

"She was wearing gold or silver coloured framed glasses, a light coloured coat with a hood and matching scarf."

Anyone else with information about the incident should contact Dorset Police.
