Cliff dog rescued on second day

A dog which fell off cliffs in Dorset on Sunday has been rescued after coastguard teams spent a second day trying to save it.

Nine-year-old Collie cross Jack fell over the edge at West Bay.

The cliff rescuers managed to get within 6ft (1.8m) of the animal, but a large crevice and fading light forced them to abandon the mission.

The team returned on Monday at 0730 GMT and eventually managed to retrieve Jack at about 1030 GMT.

Atrocious weather

The animal, which belongs to a Surrey man, fell about a third of the way down the 100ft (30m) cliff and became stuck on a grass ledge.

Coastguard watch manager Allan Norman said: "The team was able to rescue the dog despite him being in a very difficult to access position and atrocious weather conditions for the team to work in.

"I understand when the coastguard rescue officer reached the ledge, Jack was more than eager to be rescued and gave him a very warm welcome.

"I would like to remind dog walkers to keep their pets on a lead when close to the cliff edge.

"In this case the owners were lucky, in many other cases the result for the dog and owner can be far more tragic."
