Dorset towns top low waste list

The amount of rubbish sent to landfill sites in the South West has decreased by 127,000 tonnes, according to new figures.

The Department for Environment, Farming and Rural Affairs (Defra) said that recycling in the region in the last year had increased to 42.3%.

It reported that Weymouth and Portland generate the lowest level of household waste per head in England (289kg).

Environment Minister Dan Norris MP said the results were "very encouraging".

Purbeck rated the fourth lowest in the country when it comes to generating household waste (304kg).
