Posters declare 'war on rubbish'

A Dorset council has declared "war on waste" with its own take on a series of legendary wartime posters.

A group of Army cadets helped start the campaign by West Dorset District Council on Friday.

The authority's fleet of lorries have been emblazoned with the 1940s-inspired posters which include slogans like "Dig For Victory - Grow Your Own".

The county has set a target of recycling 60% of its waste by 2015/16, with West Dorset currently at 30%.

Resident Daphne Morrison, 92, of Winterborne Abbas, helped in a bakery during the Second World War.

She said: "It is amazing how little we threw away during the war.

"It was hard to get hold of some goods so everything had to be reused.

"I hope people will see these posters and it will make them think more about what they throw away."

Robert Gould, leader of the council, said: "We all need to do our bit to help tackle the worrying environmental problems we face today.

"I hope our new 1940s campaign will catch people's eye and encourage them to join together and recapture the communal spirit needed to tackle the war on waste."
