Plan for new £230,000 water park

A Dorset council has submitted a planning application to build a new £230,000 water park.

The Splash park on Christchurch Quay would have a paddling area, a new pump house, water sprays, and landscaping.

It would replace the old pool from the 1940s which has undergone a number of temporary repairs in recent years.

Christchurch council has provided £100,000 with the rest coming from a lottery grant. It is hoped the new pool could be opened next summer.

A partnership group was set up by campaigners when it was suggested the pool may have to close.

'Closure plan'

This has included a Facebook group which has attracted more than 200 members.

It was set up by resident Adrian Dwyer, who said: "A couple of weeks ago when it was sunny it was packed and the kids loved it.

The current pool was built in the 1940s but has needed numerous repairs

"But we need something for the 21st Century.

"The campaign all started when two mums overheard the council was planning to close it because the cost of repairs were too much.

"But the community has come together and with the council providing £100,000, we are confident the new water park will be open next year."

The full plan has now been submitted to Christchurch Borough Council and states: "Several schemes to refurbish or rebuild the existing pool have been investigated but have been considered to not provide good value for money.

"Consultation has identified that a different play experience is now sought by young people and the scheme... accommodates today's and future needs."

Councillors will vote on the proposal at a later date.
