Pier crash woman thrown from boat

Bournemouth Pier
Coastguards said the warm weather had brought people on to the water

A woman had to be rescued from the sea after she was thrown from a speedboat when it crashed into Bournemouth Pier.

Another boat tried to go to her aid but became swamped and lost its steering before being towed back into port.

Coastguards said the circumstances leading up to the pier crash at about 0930 BST were unclear but added there was minimal damage to the structure.

The woman was treated at the scene for a minor head wound before being taken to hospital. A man onboard was unhurt.

A Portland Coastguard spokeswoman said the weather had encouraged more people on to the water.

"There is an easterly wind which is catching people out," she added.

"We just ask people to be more careful and be prepared."
