Rescued diver dies in hospital

A diver from Somerset has died in hospital after surfacing unconscious off the Dorset coast.

The man, aged in his 50s, got into difficulties while diving from the boat Shiraz off Weymouth on Sunday.

The Portland Coastguard helicopter winched the diver on board and flew him to Dorset County Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Dorset Police said his next of kin had been informed but formal identification would take place on Monday.

A coastguard spokeswoman said: "He surfaced unconscious but we do not know what was wrong with him."
