A 22-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident

A suspected burglar was left with serious head injuries when he was attacked in a Dorset street.

Police were called to Derby Road, Bournemouth, on Wednesday and found a 56-year-old local man lying injured in the road.

The injured man may have been responsible for a burglary in Derby Road shortly beforehand, police said.

A 22-year-old man from Brazil, who is staying in Bournemouth, has been arrested in connection with the attack.

The injured man was taken to Poole Hospital and later transferred to Southampton General Hospital's neurological intensive care unit where he is in a stable condition.

Officers have appealed for anyone who was in Derby Road between midday and 1300 BST on Wednesday to contact them.

In particular they want to hear from a woman who was walking a dog in Derby Road at the time.
