Two rescued from overturned boat

One man had to be winched to safety by a coastguard helicopter and another was plucked from the water after a boat overturned along the Dorset coast.

The men were onboard a cabin cruiser, which capsized after striking the sand bar at Axmouth harbour's entrance.

The pair were rescued by the Lyme Regis RNLI lifeboat and Portland Coastguard's helicopter on Thursday afternoon.

RNLI safety officer Andy Morgan, who was on holiday in the area, was the first at the scene in his inflatable.

Mr Morgan, who was with his two children, 11-year-old Amy and Callum, 13, on board his vessel, Spirit of Sussex, picked up the call for assistance and passed the information to the coastguard.

"We stood by throughout the rescue and I was only too pleased to help as much as I could before the helicopter and lifeboat arrived," said Mr Morgan, from Horsham, West Sussex.
