Man saved after falling from boat

A 62-year-old man was rescued after falling overboard from his yacht and spending an hour in the water.

He had been tending to his sails when he fell in bumpy seas near Anvil Point, off Swanage, Dorset, on Thursday. He hurt his nose and head during the fall.

His wife, who was also onboard, raised the alarm and helped secure her husband, who was wearing a lifejacket.

The coastguard scrambled the Swanage lifeboat who helped the man back onboard and escorted the yacht to port.

The husband and wife, from Farnham, Surrey, were on their way back to Gosport, in Hampshire, when the drama unfolded.

Andy Jenkin, watch manager at Portland Coastguard, said: "The man's wife deserves a great deal of praise for the calm way in which she dealt with the emergency.

"They are clearly an experienced, competent couple and throughout this rather frightening experience they maintained a dialogue between the two of them on what they would do next."
