Raiders steal thousands of jewels

Armed masked raiders have stolen trinkets worth thousands of pounds from a jewellers in Dorset.

Wearing balaclavas and carrying sledge hammers, the duo targeted Why Jewellers in East Street, Corfe Castle, in Purbeck on Wednesday afternoon.

They smashed display cases. Police have not established what was taken.

A Volvo S80, thought to be the getaway car, was found abandoned on the approach road to Norden Farm. A police forensic team is now examining the car.

Officers want to hear from anyone who saw any suspicious activity involving cars or other motor vehicles in the area of Norden - north of Corfe Castle on the A351 road to Wareham - before or after the robbery, a police spokesman said.

The two armed robbers are believed to be aged in their 20s.
