74-year-old charged with robbery

A 74-year-old man has appeared in a magistrates' court charged with carrying out a robbery at a Dorset branch of a building society.

Robert Newnham, of no fixed address, made a brief appearance before magistrates in Blandford on Wednesday.

Mr Newnham is accused of robbing the Halifax on South Street in Dorchester on Monday afternoon.

He was remanded in custody to appear before the crown court in Dorchester on 11 May.
