A bomb disposal team will continue its work to make safe a World War II device which was found in a garden.

The unexploded 500lb (227kg) German bomb was dug up in Christchurch, Dorset, on Friday by builders laying the foundations for an extension.

Residents from more than 1,500 nearby homes were advised to move out.

Chris Dunham, of Dorset Police, said a police presence was maintained at the site during the night and work would resume on Sunday morning.

"The bomb is still where it was," he said.

'Very delicate'

A police spokesman described the bomb disposal team's task of making the bomb safe as "very delicate and dangerous".

When the bomb, which is half buried with its tail fin exposed, was discovered at the property in Friars Road, a 200m exclusion zone was set up around the site and all homes in the zone were evacuated.

Police extended the exclusion zone to 600m on Saturday.

Letters were sent to residents advising them to leave their properties and giving safety advice.
