Study centre set for beauty spot
Hengistbury Head in Bournemouth
Hengistbury Head is a popular destination for walkers
Outline plans to create an education and field studies centre at a Dorset beauty spot have been set out.

They will see the outdoor education centre and cafe at Hengistbury Head, near Bournemouth, modernised.

The barn complex at the site will be restored to provide classroom space and interpretation displays.

The plan comes after a controversial scheme to replace the existing facilities fell through earlier this year because of a funding shortfall.

Confidence over plans

Borough councillor Rob Copeland said: "These exciting and balanced proposals should provide us with great facilities at Hengistbury Head for all of our residents, visitors and schools.

"We feel it's much better to utilise the existing buildings at the site, which is why we're confident that this scheme will be a success."

He added developments would be "sensitive towards the surrounding area and enhance the natural environment of Hengistbury Head".

The local authority's cabinet has backed the plans and its full council meeting will be asked to consider them in January.
