Exeter will not challenge unitary block decision

Exeter City Council has said it will not challenge the coalition government's decision to block its bid for unitary status.

The scheme, which would have allowed the city to govern itself, had been introduced by the Labour government.

But in the Queen's Speech it was stated that the decision would be reversed.

Devon County Council has always opposed Exeter's bid, claiming it would be a "ludicrous waste" of council taxpayers' money, better spent on services.
