A 49-year-old woman has been flown to hospital in Plymouth after falling at least 50ft (15m) down a river bank while on a nature trail in Cornwall.

The woman was walking along the trail at Passage Point near Saltash Community School when she fell down the bank at St Germans river just after 1500 BST.

A Devon Air Ambulance was scrambled and flew her to Derriford Hospital.

The woman is believed to have hurt her back in the fall but the injury is not thought to be life-threatening.

John Hill, who was walking his dog near the river when the accident happened, said: "The woman must have fallen at least 50ft.

"First of all the Air Ambulance landed in a nearby field but fortunately the tide was out so the helicopter then moved off and landed on the river bed which was nearer to where the woman was.

"The crew put her on a stretcher and flew off in the direction of Plymouth."
