Coastguards said weather conditions off Teignmouth were poor

Kayakers have rescued three people from the sea after their boat capsized off the Devon coast.

Brixham Coastguard said the alarm was raised when the 16ft (4.8m) boat was swamped by a large swell during poor weather off Teignmouth

The three men were in the water for about 15 minutes before they were rescued and taken ashore by a group of kayakers from Reading University.

Ambulance paramedics treated the men on the scene, but no-one was injured.

Space blankets

"The men had a lucky escape," a Maritime and Coastguard spokesman told BBC News.

"The five kayakers did a superb job. They were were equipped and carried first aid and space blankets.

"They got the men ashore and used the space blankets to prevent hypothermia setting in."

The RNLI's Teignmouth lifeboat crew recovered the capsized boat and towed it back to shore.
