Shoppers in a Devon city have been told the story of Easter by an acting troop.

Sixteen thespians staged four scenes from the Stations of the Cross on the streets of Exeter as part of an Easter procession to mark Good Friday.

The "Walk of Witness" started at the cathedral with a service before moving along Southernhay, Princesshay and the High Street.

The actors performed at points along the way, finishing with the crucifixion in front of the Cathedral at midday.

'Powerful' story

Max Carpenter, artistic director, said: "It was exciting to see Christians from all denominations joining together in celebrating the primary event in the church calendar.

"The Easter story is as powerful and relevant in 2009 as it was when the Gospels were written.

Canon Mark Rylands, chairman of Christians Together in Central Exeter, added: "We made this Walk of Witness because we wanted people to know that God cares deeply about this city and those who live here.

"This new hope and life is available for everyone. When there is so much bad news about, it is important to hear good news that can make a difference."
