The motorists have been caught in Operation Vortex

More than 1,700 motorists have been caught in a series of undercover campaigns against dangerous driving by Devon and Cornwall Police.

Speeds of up to 140mph (225km/h) have been recorded by Operation Vortex and more than 50 other drivers were caught doing in excess of 100mph (161km/h).

There have been three month-long operations over the past two years using unmarked police cars.

Offences include dangerous overtaking and mobile phone use at the wheel.

Offences have resulted in bans, fines and points on licences for the 1,700 drivers caught in the operations.

'Dangerous motorists'

Patrols cover many routes across Devon and Cornwall, including the M5, A30, A38 and A361.

Another Operation Vortex is planned for 2009.

Supt Tim Swarbrick of Devon and Cornwall Police told BBC News: "We're not interested in the ordinary motorists.

"We are interested in the dangerous motorists that cause a danger to other road users."
