Icy conditions causing accidents

Black ice on the roads has caused a number of morning rush hour crashes across Devon and Cornwall.

Police said there were reports of at least nine accidents involving multiple vehicles across both counties.

In one incident, a bus and car collided near Tiverton, Devon, with one person suffering a wrist injury.

Elsewhere, a van crashed into a pub in the south Devon village of Little Hempston. The driver suffered minor facial injuries.

Alan Mobbs, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said: "Drivers must be aware that [at] this time of year it is likely that they will face ice at various locations across the counties.

"Anyone who has to use their car in the early morning should allow extra time.

"It would be better [for people] to delay their journey for a couple of hours rather than risk the ice."

Gina Coles, landlady of the Pig and Whistle pub in Little Hempston, said the van that had crashed into the building at about 0700 GMT had been the first of three accidents at the same spot.

"It was like a scene from Casualty, luckily no-one was hurt," she said.
