Village post office is to close

Abbotskerswell Post Office
Abbotskerswell was not on the original list of threatened branches

The Post Office has announced that it is going ahead with a decision to close down its Abbotskerswell branch.

Abbotskerswell was not on the Post Office's original list of 37 branches to close in Devon, but was named when the final list was announced.

The Post Office said it had carefully listened to comments during a public consultation and also carried out a further review before the decision.

The Post Office said the closures were needed to stop losses of 4m a week.

Protesters against the closure said the village would lose a vital service and lifeline.

The 37 branches earmarked for closure in Devon began to cease trading from August.

Post Office Ltd said it had no choice but to make the cuts after the government told it to close up to 2,500 branches.

A total of 32 of the branches being closed will be replaced by outreach services, for example mobile post offices.
