Four saved from smoke-filled home

Police in Devon broke into a smoke-filled house to rescue a woman and three children.

Devon and Somerset Fire Service said food cooking on the hob caught fire at the house on St Andrew's Estate in Cullompton early on Saturday.

Smoke was spotted coming from the property and the fire service alerted police who broke in to find a woman asleep in the lounge.

The children - including a seven-month-old girl - were found asleep upstairs.

"The youngest child appeared to be suffering some difficulty in breathing and was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, for precautionary checks, but was released later the same morning," a police spokesperson said.
