Beach loses its Blue Flag status

A Devon beach has lost its Blue Flag status for the rest of the season after the heavy rain of the past few weeks.

Water readings are regularly taken at all Blue Flag beaches and only a certain number of readings below the required standards are allowed.

In recent weeks the number of substandard readings at Paignton's main beach has exceeded that limit.

Torbay Council says it is disappointing and has put the poor readings down to the persistent rain.

However, it says it is perfectly safe to swim at the beach.
