A man who threatened police with a machete is in custody after a Taser stun gun was used to subdue him.

Emergency services were called to an address in Babbacombe Road, Torquay, Devon, following reports of an assault at 0250 BST.

Negotiators attempted to resolve the situation peacefully, then at 1115 BST officers from the Tactical Aid Group, entered the house.

Assistant Chief Constable Bob Spencer praised the officers for their bravery.

"I was personally impressed with the bravery of the officers involved in this incident," he said.

"They were faced with extreme personal danger from a man who was behaving very violently.

"The fact that they used an option to safely disarm this man, bringing the situation to a safe conclusion for all involved was superb."

A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with a domestic violence incident and is in custody at Torquay Police Station.

About 20 officers, including firearms officers and a dog unit, were involved in the incident.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service was also at the scene.

Taser guns, which stun people with an electric shock, were introduced by the force in 2005.
