Two men are still being questioned by police over the attempted murder of a businessman who was shot on the doorstep of his Plymouth home.

Colin Pester, 61, was shot by attackers who confronted him at his home in Lancaster Gardens on Wednesday.

He remains in a critical but not life-threatening condition in hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

A 25-year-old man and a 42-year-old man, both from Plymouth, are being held at Charles Cross police station.

Emergency services, including armed response officers, were called to Mr Pester's home at 1825 BST on Wednesday.

A police spokesperson said demands were made for money and jewellery after a shotgun was discharged.

The "high-value" jewellery stolen included two gold Rolex watches and a number of ladies rings.

Mr Pester runs a car dealership in the Mutley area of Plymouth and neighbours said the home he shares with his wife, son and daughter, had been broken into on a number of occasions.

It is believed he was pistol whipped before being shot and police think the attackers escaped in a silver Renault Clio.

Sgt Russ Phillips said it was being treated as a very serious incident.

"It's completely out of character for this area of the city and for the city in general," he said.

Neighbour Terry Luscombe said he was shocked to discover how badly injured the victim was.

"They're a very nice family. I'm shocked this should happen here."
