Moor creative centre work starts

Princetown
One aim of the project is to help boost Princetown's economy

Work has begun to build a new £1.7m centre for creative enterprise on a Devon moor.

Dartmoor's Duchy Square development in Princetown will offer advice and support for new creative businesses and also promote local artists' work.

It also houses 17 small workshops and offices, a gallery for arts and crafts and a teaching studio.

The aim of the project is to boost the local economy, support local business, and create a tourist attraction.

Devon County Council said the aim is to regenerate the area by supporting local businesses across several key sectors, including: creative industries, farming, food and tourism.

'Landmark achievement'

Money for the scheme is coming from the council, the South West Regional Development Agency, the Duchy of Cornwall as well as European funding from the Objective Two scheme.

Cllr Humphrey Temperley of Devon County Council said the development would be a landmark achievement for Princetown and Dartmoor.

He said: "It will ensure a thriving local business community and attract more tourists by showcasing the best arts and crafts.

"Developing local skills and supporting sustainable business development are critical to ensuring the long term success of the project, and enhancing the area's potential."

The project is using environmental construction techniques to minimise its carbon footprint.

Project bosses said the construction would use recycled products where possible and that the building design had been specified to have minimal impact on the environment due to its location within a conservation area of Dartmoor National Park.
