Town raises concerns on fire cuts
A public meeting is being held in Ilfracombe on Wednesday to discuss the downgrading of the town's fire station.

Proposals by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service mean the station, which has day cover, will be staffed by retained firefighters.

Plympton, Exmouth and Paignton would change from full time cover to day crewing only.

The fire service said it was in an "impossible position" with a large gap in finances.

Ilfracombe Mayor John Swan, said the potential risk of fire was increasing in Ilfracombe with new developments and a new ferry service to Swansea.

He said: "How can you reduce the fire service when there is no reduction in the risk?

"I feel it is unacceptable."

The meeting, which will be attended by the fire service and unions, is at 1900 GMT at Ilfracombe Junior School.
