Eight 'illegal workers' arrested

Eight suspected illegal immigrants have been arrested at two restaurants and a takeaway in Plymouth.

Border and Immigration Agency (BIA) staff arrested five Chinese men, aged 43, 40, 37 and 25, and a woman of 37, all suspected of illegal working.

A 34-year-old Chinese man was arrested at the Royal Garden, St Andrew's Cross.

Two Bangladeshi men, aged 33 and 34, were also arrested at the Indus Indian takeaway, on Albert Road, in the operations on Tuesday.

Crack down

All the arrested workers, who were questioned at Charles Cross Police Station in Plymouth, now face being deported.

The BIA said the operation, which came after tip-offs, had been a "great success".

Jane Farleigh, regional director for Wales and the South West, said: "The Border and Immigration Agency is determined to put a stop to illegal working in Plymouth and across the South West.

"We want to work with employers to help them understand what they need to do to prevent it, but crack down on those who are found to be flouting the rules.

"Illegal working is unfair on honest employers who recruit staff with the right to work in the UK and who pay them a proper salary."
